What is a FabLab?
A FabLab can be described as a cutting-edge workshop or a "maker space" equipped with advanced technology. The term "FabLab" originated from the educational division of MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA). Most FabLabs function as small-scale workspaces designed to foster innovation, stimulate invention, and promote local entrepreneurial initiatives. Furthermore, FabLabs are swiftly gaining ground in cross-disciplinary educational environments within universities and public schools, enhancing STE(A)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curricula. What’s in a FabLab?
The inaugural FabLab emerged alongside an MIT course titled "how to make (almost) anything," a foundational concept ingrained within every subsequent FabLab creation. Essentially, FabLabs harmonize the conventional ethos of a shop class with an array of cutting-edge tools and digital fabrication machinery. These encompass 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, routers, compact mills, vinyl cutters, 3D scanners, an electronics workstation, and standard workshop implements. The machinery within FabLabs generally possesses adaptability, capable of interfacing with an array of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, textiles, electronic PCB boards, and more. In these spaces, students can forge a diverse range of objects, spanning from intricately engraved signs to tailor-made hardware and even prefab housing components. With the extensive array of machinery, tools, and materials available, the creative possibilities within a FabLab are virtually boundless.
